Does anyone else use Fitbit?

I have that, and track my runs on Garmin & Strava. I’m on Nike+ too, but it’s never accurate since my ipod doesn’t have GPS.

Anyway, I get stupidly excited when I get these weekly emails.

Breaking-I Suck at Blogging

So, it’s been a bit.

I’m still running. Whether it’s in the gym on the dreadmill or outside, I’m still doing it. And while my eating habits are not amazing, they are so much better than they were. I have managed to avoid soda and have been sticking to water or tea. I still need to eat way more fruits and veggies though. And I still cannot manage to get up early to run before work. I need to get back into that.

Friday after work, I got in a 3 mile run on the treadmill and did my weights workout. Then did a 3 mile hike with the boyfriend.

Saturday, I did 3 miles on the elliptical along with my weights.

Sunday, I planned on being a bum all day and doing nothing. Cause I deserve a rest day, right? Well that may be true but I can never sit still for long. I got my daughter up and took her on a trail run with me. The first mile is all a steep uphill so we jog/hiked it and then ran the next 1/2 mile and then ran the entire 1.5 miles back downhill.

My daughter is now 2 weeks out from her 5K and I am 3 weeks out from the Wings for Life World Run. I did it last year and hopefully I can get a bit further this year. We’ll see!

After that, I have 0 races till Aug, when I have the Arroyo Creek 5K which happens to be in my neighborhood. This will be my 4th year running it.

Then, nothing again until my marathon in November. Then the dreaded 50K.

Ugh, I’m tired just thinking about it.

Being An Overly Sensitive Adult is No Fun

Recently I’ve had people question why I have non racing pictures of me running. And of course I got all offended and butthurt thinking they were making fun of me or being judgy and thinking I’m a narcissistic asshole. Which may in fact be true(them being mean, not me being an asshole), but I try to give people the benefit of the doubt that maybe they were just curious and not asking in a mean way. People are weird though, so who knows.

Well today, I was asked again and I gave real answers as opposed to my snarky/sarcastic ones. Here’s another reason. When I first started running, I started following a ton of running blogs and running pages on Facebook. And Twitter. And then Instagram. And to be 100% honest and real, everytime I saw someone post a running photo, it motivated me. On days I didn’t want to run (and there were a lot of them, there still are) I’d go on Instagram and see someones photo and think “well now I need to go for a run”. And then I started posting my own photos. It helped me. And if it helps even one person get off their butt and get outside (it doesn’t have to be a run, but any kind of activity) then my narcissism (if that’s what you see it as) was worth it. Other people have unknowingly (and some knowingly) helped me and I want to do that for others too.

So sure, its annoying. You see tons of photos of me running up and down hills and back and forth on trails. But it motivates me. And hopefully it motivates someone else.

Goals

This morning I ran my first race since the LA Marathon. My hip flexors were still a bit tight and I didn’t go into the race expecting anything so with no PR today, I wasn’t upset.

In fact:

7th out of 115 in my age group, not too shabby. I know that the race that I PR’d on, I had perfect running conditions. It was cool and overcast and all flat. Today had a few false flats and it was pretty hot out already. I don’t like excuses, it is what it is. I’m proud of what I managed today and that’s all that matters.

After I got back home from the race, James (my boyfriend) and I went to lunch. While there, we started talking about what I’d like to do next. I have a marathon in November and a 50K in December. He knows that the Boston Marathon has always been a distant goal of mine since I started running. I really really want to qualify. But until I turn 40, I need to finish a qualifying marathon in under 3 hours and 40 minutes. That will require A LOT of work. Work I am willing to put in. Work James is willing to help me do. The 2016 qualifying window has closed but as of today, March 28, 2015 I have my eye on 2017 or 2018. I. Can. Do. This.

2 Weeks Post Marathon

It’s been almost 2 weeks since LA and my legs are finally feeling normal.

Which is perfect timing because this Saturday I will be running the Deena Kastor 5K in Agoura Hills, CA. It is one part of the Great Race of Agoura Hills.

There are 6 races happening at the same time that day. Last year I ran the Pacific Half, which was great but A LOT of hills. This soon after LA, I’m glad I didn’t sign up for it again.

Packet pickup is today or tomorrow, or the morning of. Since I’m a chronic planner, I will be doing my pickup ahead of time to make sure that there are no issues.

They’ve been sending us information pretty steadily all week to prepare and I received my bib number earlier this week.

Back to the Trails!

This weekend marked my return to running since the LA Marathon.

I went for a short trail run on Saturday. Just 1.5 miles but something is better than nothing, right?

After, I went by my moms house to go for a walk with her. She’s 2 weeks post hip replacement surgery and when she goes for walks outside, someone needs to go with her. We went for a .65 mile walk that was 1/2 uphill, so in my book-that makes her pretty badass.

Sunday I made my 12 year old daughter go for a run with me because…….she’s registered for her first solo 5K! On March 11, we went to the Road Runner Sports St. Pattys Day Party and our friend Sharon won a free entry to the Gator Run 5K that’s at the end of April. Hannah asked if she could do it and I said we’d see. Sharon wound up not being able to do it, so she gave Hannah her entry.So to the trails we went! We even took our dog with us for extra motivation.

3 Days Post Marathon

So here we are, 3 days post LA Marathon. My legs aren’t as sore. My feet and hips no longer hurt. Stairs are still a huge challenge (more the going down than going up). And I am antsy to go run. I know I can’t. Well, can’t is a strong word. I SHOULDN’T run. I need to give my body time to rest and recover.

I’ve been laying low the last 3 days, walking just a little but nothing more than what I have to do to get around at home/work. Today, I went for my morning walk on my break and the first lap around campus felt good. 2nd lap, I could feel my legs getting tired. 3rd lap, my legs were over it.

Tonight, I’ll hit the gym and do core work and weights only. Legs get 2 more days off before we go for a mini run on Saturday. Next Saturday I have the Deena Kastor 5k that I totally forgot I registered for. Something tells me a PR will not be in the cards for me that day, but that’s ok!

All I am focused on now is November and my next marathon and then a month later my 50K. Which, omg.

Running From The Sun

And I mean that quite literally.

Yesterday, March 15, I ran the LA Marathon for the 1st time. Now, this wasn’t my first marathon but I knew this would be difficult. How, do you ask? Because I didn’t really train for it. My last marathon was in mid November and the longest run I did between then and yesterday was 6.2 miles. Between being sick almost all of January and then my dad getting sick and passing away, I really let my training slack. I chose to proceed anyway, but didn’t put any serious expectations on myself. And then the news of the intense heat came. It was going to be in the 90’s on race day. At that point, I just decided to make sure I finished, no matter how long it took.

Race day started like this:

At 4am if it was almost 70 out, I knew it was going to just get worse.

The race originally was going to start at 7:25 but due to the heat advisory they moved the start time up half an hour. 6:55 am rolled around and we were off. Not even out of the stadium and guys were running off to the side of the course to pee. Hilarious.

The first 3 miles were great as we made our way through Los Angeles. Just after mile 4, we hit the hill from hell. Fortunately it was so early on, it was no big deal. But, I was already starting to feel the heat coming. I started grabbing a cup of water or gatorade to drink at every station and an additional cup of water to dump on my head. Anytime I saw someone handing out water, I took it.

Which of course meant multiple bathroom breaks. But hey, I was able to run comfortably with no stomach issues. Those couple of extra minutes off my time were well worth it.

At mile 17 or so, I saw my friend Estevan. I was SO happy to see a familiar face. I was getting ready to walk when I saw him, but once I did, I couldn’t! Around mile 18.5 I saw my friend Cameron who works for the fire department. Mile 20 or so (I think) I saw my friend and co-worker Joy who jogged with me for about 1/10 of a mile making sure I was hydrated and that I didn’t need anything. Mile 22 I saw my friend Gregg who also checked to make sure I didn’t need anything. Seeing familiar faces so late in a race when you are just exhausted and in pain, was amazing. Gave that little added extra “umph” that I’m sure I so very badly needed.

As we ran through the VA area, I knew we were almost done (afterall, it was mile 20) but then I saw Purple Heart Hill. Oh. My. God. I wish I took a picture. It’s not what you want so far into a road race. At all.

And while I hadn’t hit the wall mentally, my feet and hip flexors were KILLING me. I seriously just wanted to sit down and rest. But I pushed on.

Mile 21 came and went. Mile 22. I got a text from my boyfriend of his notifications of my splits. I pushed on. Mile 23. Mile 24. My feet had had enough. I walked almost that entire mile. Mile 25. I knew this is where I needed to dig deep and finish strong. I knew my splits were slow. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do this. That I could get it done faster than my last marathon, which I HAD trained for.

Mile 25-26.2 were awful. Wide open road. No shade. Tons of people screaming from the sidelines. I pushed. I sprinted as fast as I could after running 25 miles. As I got to the finish line, I heard them call my name. I knew I had made it. I was done!

I grabbed my medal. My banana. My water. Any food they were handing out, I took.

Then began the walk back to my car. Almost 1.5 miles. Which normally, I wouldn’t have cared. But after running 26 miles, I was over it and just wanted to get home.

I called my boyfriend and cried. Everything hurt. My back, hips, thighs, knees, calfs, ankles, feet, toes….you name it, it hurt.

But you know what? Regardless of all that….you know what?

3 Days

This Sunday is the LA Marathon. And it’s supposed to be between 85-90 degrees. Any planning I’ve made for Sunday has gone completely out the window and all I care about now is not passing out and crossing the finish line before the cut off. I’m fairly confident I’ll be able to, but I am not looking forward to sweating my weight out. Wish me luck.

Also, I am 5 weeks out from the MDA Los Angeles Muscle Walk.
